Home Canned Stewed Tomatoes

During the summer months, grandma would can her own tomatoes for the winter months. She always preferred to use her own homegrown vegetable to cook with at home. In the back of the house, grandma had a giant garden that she planted in spring. She made sure she had plenty of tomato plants in her garden. She would make stewed tomatoes and regular canned tomatoes for winter. She used these to cook the different sauces she made and also for her homemade spaghetti sauce.

Ingredients:Stewed Tomatoes

  • 30 tomatoes, scalded and cut up
  • 3 green peppers, chopped
  • 3 onions, chopped
  • 6 stalks celery, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons celery salt
  • 4 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Directions:

  1. Adjust the amount of green peppers, onions, and celery to your tastes
  2. Mix together and pack in sterilized jars.
  3. Wipe jar tops, remove air bubbles and seal!
  4. Process for 45 minutes in boiling water bath.
